Jose Zarate Killed in Multi-Vehicle Car Accident; Driver Arrested
VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (May 15, 2023) — A fatal crash involving five vehicles happened Monday on Highway 101 at Amphitheater Road in Dulah.
The Ventura County collision occurred around 9:30 a.m. on May 15th, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
The driver of a 2012 Ford F-550 utility truck was reportedly driving above 65 mph. The truck allegedly rear-ended a 2002 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and set off a fiery chain-reaction crash. The Toyota hit a 2018 Tesla Model-3, that car hit a 2019 Honda HR-V which hit a 2007 Honda Accord.
Jose Zarate, 50, of Ventura, who was driving the Toyota pickup truck, became trapped in his vehicle as it burst into flames and died at the scene.
The CHP report stated there was a large amount of black smoke coming from the area.
The Ventura County Fire Department responded and pronounced Jose Zarate dead at the scene. They also treated several other drivers at the scene for minor injuries.
Additionally, police arrested the 30-year-old Lancaster man driving the Ford truck and booked him into the Ventura County Jail on Felony Gross Vehicular Manslaughter charges.
Authorities closed down three lanes of the northbound Highway 101 due to the crash.
Tow trucks responded to remove five vehicles from the roadway.
Investigators are working on the case to determine fault for the Dulah crash on Highway 101.
