 Fatal Crash Highway 101, Nojoqui Summit Near GaviotaSanta Barbara Man, 80, Killed in Highway 101 Crash

GAVIOTA, Calif. (March 24, 2022) — A fatal crash on Highway 101 near Gaviota on Monday left an 80-year-old Santa Barbara man with fatal injuries.

The head-on collision happened about 7:30 a.m. on March 21st on Highway 101, just south of the Nojoqui Summit, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Two trucks collided when one of them veered into the path of the other one in the northbound lanes, according to the CHP.

A GMC pickup was traveling south on Highway 101 when it crossed onto the northbound side. It collided with a driver in a Jeep pickup truck, police said.

The 80-year-old man driving the Jeep suffered major injuries and died at the scene.

Firefighters had to extricate at least one person from a vehicle, according to Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli.

Meanwhile, the GMC driver was not injured. The motorist is identified as Juliel Montes, 34, of Salinas.

Authorities report that alcohol and drugs are not factors in the collision, but it remains under investigation.
