Farm Tractor and Car Collide on State Route 152
GILROY, Calif. (Sept. 26, 2023) — A fatal crash involving a green farm tractor happened Tuesday morning on Highway 152 at Canada Road in Gilroy.
The two-vehicle collision occurred in the eastbound lanes of State Route 152 around 7:34 a.m. on Sept. 26th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials reported the drivers of a green tomato harvester tractor and a white 2021 Toyota RAV4 were involved. The SUV was traveling eastbound on SR-152 and collided with the front of the harvester as the tractor attempted to cross the highway. The driver of the tractor reportedly “came onto the road and hit a vehicle,” the report said.
However, a witness who was cutting tomatoes in the area told authorities the SUV may have “let the tractor go” and then “suddenly accelerated and crashed into the tractor,” the report said. The SUV also veered off the roadway into a field and suffered major damage in the crash.
The 78-year-old Santa Clara man driving the Toyota died following the collision. His passenger, 76-year-old Santa Clara woman, was transported to Natividad Medical Center with major injuries.
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Coalinga man driving the harvester did not report any injuries.
Investigators are working on the case to determine fault for the fatal Gilroy crash on Highway 152.
