Fatality in Multi-Vehicle Crash on State Route 4 in Contra Costa County
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif., (June 9, 2026) — A fatal two-vehicle crash happened in Brentwood early Tuesday morning on Highway 4 East, just west of Balfour Road in Contra Costa County.
The incident occurred on June 9th at approximately 1:43 a.m., involving an older BMW sedan and a Ford F250 pickup truck carrying landscaping equipment. The vehicles collided, causing significant debris to scatter across all lanes of eastbound State Route 4. The Ford pickup overturned, blocking the slow lane, while the BMW came to rest in a grassy area on the right-hand side of the highway.
Emergency responders, including California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Contra Costa County Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene. A witness reported seeing a male driver of one vehicle exiting his vehicle and sitting on the ground with possible injuries. Despite the prompt response from paramedics, one individual succumbed to their injuries at the scene, although further details about the victim, including their identity, have not yet been released.
The collision led to the closure of all eastbound lanes for several hours, prompting a Sigalert to advise motorists to use alternate routes. The lanes were reopened by 5:01 a.m. as authorities concluded their on-site investigation and cleared the debris.
