One Killed, Several Injured in 2-Car Accident
MURPHYS, CA (July 21, 2023) — A Bakersfield man was killed and six people were injured Thursday in a car accident on Highway 4 near Utica Powerhouse Road in Murphys.
The traffic collision occurred around 3:30 p.m. on July 20th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The head-on crash occurred after the Bakersfield man’s westbound 2003 Toyota Camry veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a Toyota Tundra pickup truck, according to MyMotherLode.com. The man suffered major injuries and died at the scene. However, his two passengers were taken by ambulances to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
Meanwhile, Louis Sweet of Sonora, was driving the pickup truck with three juvenile passengers. All four people were hurt, but the driver suffered moderate injuries. The three passengers were released to family members with minor injuries.
Investigators are working to determine what led to the fatal crash on Highway 4 and are looking into whether distracted driving or fatigue were factors.
