Woman, 23, Killed; Woman, 43, Injured in 2-Vehicle Collision
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Sept. 11, 2023) — A 23-year-old Bakersfield woman died early Sunday morning in a crash on the northbound Highway 99, just south of Sherwood Avenue in Bakersfield.
The two-vehicle collision occurred around 5:17 a.m. on Sept. 10th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Police responded to the scene where debris was scattered across the highway and a pickup truck was off the roadway, Bakersfield Now reports.
The young Bakersfield woman was reportedly driving her 2014 Chevrolet northbound on Highway, police said. She came to a stop in the No. 2 lane and the lights on her vehicle were off, officials said.
Meanwhile, a 43-year-old woman driving a 2019 GMC came upon the stopped Chevrolet in the northbound lanes and crashed into it going around 65 to 70 miles per hour, police said.
The driver of the GMC told authorities she did not see the blacked out Chevrolet in the roadway until she hit the vehicle from behind.
The impact sent both vehicles off the roadway and they came to a stop on the dirt shoulder.
Unfortunately, the 23-year-old driver of the Chevrolet suffered major injuries in the crash. Responding paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. CHP investigators noted she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The driver of the GMC sustained undisclosed injuries in the collision.
