Fatal Crash I-280 Freeway, Cesar Chavez Street in San Francisco (7/1)

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., (July 1, 2026) — A crash today in San Francisco on the Interstate 280 Freeway, near the Cesar Chavez Street off-ramp, resulted in a fatality, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident, reported on Wednesday, July 1st at approximately 8:38 a.m., occurred just south of 25th Street. Emergency responders, including San Francisco Fire Medic #522, arrived swiftly on the scene. The crash involved a silver two-door vehicle, which was found partially blocking the right-hand side of the road.
Initial reports indicate that a male victim was discovered lying halfway out of the vehicle. The victim was reportedly transported to San Francisco General Hospital by Fire Medic 43, but unfortunately succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities issued a SIG alert due to the blockage of Lane #3 and the #1 lane of the off-ramp, but all lanes were later reopened by 9:23 a.m. The roadway was cleared following the incident, and the vehicle was moved to the Cesar Chavez off-ramp.
The circumstances leading to the crash are under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Investigators are urging any witnesses to come forward with information that can provide clarity on the events leading up to the fatal incident.
