BREAKING: Fatal Crash on I-680 Near Stone Valley Road
ALAMO, Calif. (April 17, 2025) – A loose tire fell off a blue van and caused a fatal crash on southbound Interstate 680 Freeway, just north of the Stone Valley Road off ramp in Alamo.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the deadly collision happened around 1:38 PM on April 17th.
Preliminary reports indicate the crash was triggered by a tire that came off the van and began bouncing across the roadway. The airborne tire struck a white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, causing a solo vehicle crash that ultimately resulted in the driver’s death.
Emergency crews, including the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office, responded swiftly to the scene. The coroner was notified at approximately 2:06 PM, confirming the fatal outcome of the crash.
Two vehicles were towed as part of the investigation— a Toyota Tundra on the southbound side of the highway and a blue van on the northbound side that reportedly lost a rear tire. Authorities have requested the vehicles be held for evidence.
The crash caused significant traffic disruptions, with lane closures reported near the Stone Valley Road on-ramp. Caltrans and Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) were on-site assisting with cleanup and traffic management.
CHP is continuing its investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and identify the vehicle from which the loose tire originated.
