Fatal Crash on I-80 East Near Pomona Street in Crockett

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif. (March 27, 2025) — A fatal crash on the eastbound I-80 Freeway happened Thursday, just west of the Pomona Street off-ramp, causing significant traffic delays on the Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge.

The incident, which occurred around 3:52 a.m. on March 27th in Crockett, involved at least four vehicles including a semi-truck.

The drivers of a silver Volvo V90 with a surfboard on top, a silver Monte Carlo sedan, a silver Kia sedan, a silver Volkswagen station wagon, and the white semi-truck with a green and blue stripe were involved.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and paramedics responded and a SigAlert was issued due to blockage to all traffic lanes. Traffic was diverted off I-80 onto Cummings Skyway, and drivers were advised to expect delays for up to an hour.

By 4:40 a.m., CHP officials confirmed there was at least one fatality. A coroner was called to the scene to investigate. Meanwhile, a heavy-duty tow truck, an evidence tow, and a regular tow truck removed damaged vehicles.

“This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the hazards of early-morning driving, and authorities urge drivers to exercise caution while traveling on the highways,” said Attorney James Johnson.

Investigators are working to determine fault for the crash on the I-80 in Crockett, Contra Costa County.
