Samantha Haun, 30, Killed in Crash with Drunk Driver on Highway 18
APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (Dec. 27, 2024) — Samantha Haun, 30, died in a head-on crash with a suspected DUI driver in Apple Valley on Monday night on Highway 18 at Quinnault Road.
The traffic accident happened on westbound SR-18 around 8:04 p.m. on December 23rd, according to Victor Valley News Group.
Two vehicles were involved and badly damaged. Police say a blue 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander was traveling eastbound on Highway 18 and crossed into the path of a westbound 2016 Honda Civic. The two vehicles collided and the SUV spun around and was facing the wrong way in the roadway.
Vicente Zuniga-Medina, 45, who was driving the SUV, was allegedly slurring his speech and he appeared to be drunk, the report said. He was also complaining of leg pain and was limping. He was taken to a hospital due to a broken foot.
Meanwhile, Samantha Haun, who was driving the Honda, was unresponsive and trapped in the wreckage.
Both of the vehicles were smoking and bystanders tried to reach the woman in the Honda who was not breathing, the report said.
The Apple Valley Fire Protection District sent firefighters and paramedics to the scene to help those injured in the crash.
Meanwhile, arriving police took the man from the SUV into custody. His Blood-Alcohol level was .22% or nearly three times the legal limit, ABC News reported. He was booked at High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto on charges of Vehicular Manslaughter while Intoxicated with Gross Negligence.
The case is under investigation by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT).
Witnesses should contact the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station at (760) 240-7400.
