1 Dead, 2 Drivers Arrested DUI
5-Vehicle Crash on I-15 Freeway
BONSALL, Calif. (June 20, 2024) – One person is dead and others are injured after collisions involving five vehicles and involving two suspected drunk drivers on the Interstate 15 Freeway in the Bonsall area.
It happened late Wednesday night in a series of four separate collisions that began at around 11:40 p.m. on June 19th, near Old Highway 395, according to the California Highway Patrol and a KGTV report.
Two of the five motorists involved were allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs and they were both arrested following the crash.
One of those drivers was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck that rear-ended a Nissan Titan pickup truck in the southbound number two lane of the freeway.
This set off a series of collisions when another alleged DUI driver in a Volkswagen Tiguan crashed into the disabled Chevrolet.
Next, a driver in a Toyota Camry crashed into the back of the Volkswagen and a Kia Soul sideswiped the left front-end of the Chevrolet.
Paramedics responded and confirmed the death of a 32-year-old Compton woman who was riding as a passenger in the Toyota. The 32-year-old Perris man driving the Toyota suffered major, life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized.
The others involved in the collision suffered various non-life threatening injuries and were treated on scene or at the hospital.
Meanwhile, police arrested the driver from the Chevrolet, Mark Anthony Bengal, 26, of Chula Vista, on suspicion of driving under the influence.
They also arrested the driver from the Volkswagen’s, Phillip Mattson, on suspicion of DUI.
Witnesses or anyone with information about the accident should contact the CHP Oceanside Area office at 760-643-3400.
