Woman Killed, 2 Injured in Crash on 280 Freeway
SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. (August 28, 2023) — A fatal crash on the Interstate 280 Freeway happened early Sunday morning near State Route 92 between Highlands and Redwood City.
The collision was one of two deadly crashes in the Bay Area this past weekend, according to ABC 7 News and the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials reported one person died in the crash on the Interstate 280 Freeway and two others were injured following the 3 a.m. crash in the southbound lanes.
A 39-year-old San Francisco woman driving a black 2020 Volkswagen collided with a concrete SR-92 overpass barrier before it spun back into the Nos. 1 and 2 lanes of the freeway where it came to rest. An oncoming white 2013 Honda CRV crashed into the Volkswagen, killing the woman in the Volkswagen.
The person from the Volkswagen died at the scene, the CHP said. Also, the 31-year-old San Jose man driving the Honda and his 31-year-old female passenger, were treated for minor injuries at Stanford Hospital.
Police do not suspect alcohol was a factor for the driver of the Honda, but it’s unknown if the driver of the Volkswagen was intoxicated or not.
The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing. Witnesses may contact Officer E. Jimenez with the Redwood City CHP at (650) -779-2700.
