Deadly Rollover Crash on I-5 Freeway in Mission Viejo

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (Jan. 2, 2024) — A fatal crash happened Tuesday afternoon on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway, just south of Crown Valley Parkway in Mission Viejo.

The two-vehicle collision occurred at around 12:22 p.m. on Jan. 2nd, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials reported a pickup truck and a second vehicle collided due to unknown circumstances. The Chevrolet pickup truck overturned onto its roof and was blocking the HOV and No. 1 lanes of the freeway, the report said.

Paramedics responded to the scene and confirmed the death of at least one person.

Police issued a SigAlert for the collision due to vehicles blocking at least three traffic lanes and Caltrans was contacted for a hazmat or biohazard cleanup. Tow trucks removed two of the vehicles for evidence.
