3 Motorcyclists Killed in Multi-Vehicle Collision
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (June 27, 2024) — Three people died in a chain-reaction crash Thursday on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway near Las Pulgas Road in the Camp Pendleton area.
UPDATE: A spokesman for the U.S. Navy has confirmed two of the three men who died were sailors based in San Diego. They were identified as Stephen Jermaine Williams, 37, who was stationed in San Diego; and Jess Lee Davis, 28, who was assigned to the USS Alexandria (SSN 757), in San Diego.
The multi-vehicle collision occurred at around 3:04 a.m. on June 27th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials reported a series of collisions starting with a black Jeep Wrangler that hit a guardrail and then stalled in the middle lanes of the freeway. Next, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van crashed into the Jeep and overturned and four motorcycles crashed into the Mercedes and caught on fire.
The Camp Pendleton Fire Department responded to the scene. Three of the four motorcyclists died at the scene of the crash and at least five others were injured including the surviving motorcyclist.
The 29-year-old driver of the Jeep and his 50-year-old male passenger were critically injured and airlifted to a hospital. Two people from the van were also hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.
Investigators are working to determine fault for the series of collisions.
