Fatal Crash Interstate 8 Freeway and Second Street in El Cajon
Driver Killed, Toddler Injured in El Cajon Car Accident
EL CAJON, Calif. (Jan. 30, 2024) — A wrong-way driver died in a fatal El Cajon crash on the Interstate 8 Freeway Sunday night and a toddler from the other vehicle was seriously injured.
The two-vehicle collision occurred at around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials reported the driver of a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was heading east in the westbound lanes of the I-8 freeway near El Cajon Valley High School, the Times of San Diego reports.
The Silverado reportedly veered to the right and went off the roadway. The truck also hit a concrete guardrail wall before it went back across lanes and hit a center median as well as a second barrier on the west side of Second Street, CHP officials said.
Upon impact, chunks of concrete broke off and hit several vehicles on Second Street and the 17-month-old child was injured while seated in one of the vehicles.
Meanwhile, the pickup went up onto a sidewalk on the east side of Second Street and caught on fire.
Bystanders attempted to rescue the driver, but he died inside the engulfed truck.
Finally, paramedics transported injured child to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. The toddler is being treated for serious non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The fatal El Cajon crash remains under investigation.
