SUV Hauling U-Haul Trailer Crashes into Dunaway Road Bridge
EL CENTRO, Calif. (May 11, 2018) – Two adults were killed, 7 children ages one to 12 years old were injured in a collision on the Interstate 8 Freeway at Dunaway Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash took place 10:32 a.m. this morning when a 1999 Ford Expedition pulling a U-Haul trailer crashed into a bridge support post and now the bridge is on the verge of collapsing, the CHP report said.
The 42-year-old male driver and his 31-year-old female passenger were both killed in the crash. Two children were badly injured and one had a dislocated arm. There was debris all over the roadway, police said. The injured were airlifted from the scene of the collision.
The injured children included a 12-year-old boy who suffered cuts and abrasions to his head and body. He was transported by ambulance to Loma Linda Medical Center.
Two children were taken to Rady Children’s Hospital. A 10-year-old girl who suffered facial abrasions and required a tourniquet to her leg and a 4-year-old girl with undisclosed injuries.
Three children were taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center including a 5-year-old boy who had burns to his left calf and abrasions to his body. Paramedics also took a one-year-old boy with a contusion on his forehead and a 2-year-old boy who suffered a broken clavicle to the hospital.
Also injured was a 6-year-old girl who was taken to Riverside University Hospital.
It appears that the driver lost control of the vehicle and no others were involved.
