2 Men Killed in Solo Crash in Long Beach
LONG BEACH, Calif. (Jan. 22, 2024) — Two men died in a solo crash Sunday night after their SUV veered off Studebaker Road and plunged into a water channel in Long Beach.
The SUV was heading northbound on Studebaker Road when the fatal crash occurred at around 6:20 p.m. on Jan. 21st just south of Loynes Drive, according to a report by the Long Beach Fire Department. The collision occurred at a canal near the San Gabriel River and a power plant.
Firefighters, lifeguards and Urban Search and Rescue divers worked to rescue the men from the vehicle in 10-foot deep water, the Orange County Register reports. They managed to pull out one of the men from the water and rush him to a hospital, but he later died at the hospital. His name was not released, but he was in his 30s, the report said.
Meanwhile, divers continued searching the submerged vehicle and located the second man who was trapped in the SUV. The Los Angeles County Fire Department used a heavy-duty wrecker to retrieve the vehicle and the man died on scene. Authorities did not release his name or age.
Investigators closed down Studebaker Road in both directions between Second Street and Loynes Drive to conduct an investigation.
