Fatal Crash on Interstate 5 Freeway, Washington Street, San Diego (7/15)
SAN DIEGO, Calif., (July 15, 2026) — A tragic multi-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality early Wednesday on the Interstate 5 Freeway southbound near Washington Street, according to the San Diego Police Department.
The incident occurred on July 15th at approximately 1:12 a.m., involving two vehicles. Initial reports indicate that one vehicle was on the right-hand shoulder, and the other was in the center divider. Emergency response teams, including police and paramedics, arrived swiftly on the scene after the incident was reported.
Tragically, a woman was reportedly ejected from a vehicle and sustained severe injuries. Eyewitnesses reported the person was bleeding heavily and in urgent need of medical attention. Unfortunately, despite paramedics’ efforts, the individual succumbed to their injuries.
Authorities closed several lanes on I-5 southbound from Old Town to Sassafras Street to manage the situation and conduct an investigation. The San Diego Police Department is actively investigating the crash and has urged any witnesses to come forward with information.
