Bakersfield, CA – (May 9, 2025) — The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has confirmed a fatal traffic collision Friday in Bakersfield on westbound State Route 178, just west of Mount Vernon Avenue.
The crash involves a black sedan that veered off the roadway and struck a pole, resulting in major front-end damage and one confirmed fatality.
Emergency crews, including firefighters and paramedics, responded around 12:30 PM on May 9th and attempted life-saving measures, including CPR on the driver, but the individual was later pronounced deceased. The vehicle was reported to be smoking with its occupants initially trapped inside.
Traffic Impact:
- #3 lane was temporarily blocked by emergency responders.
- Caltrans has coned off a section of damaged guardrail, with follow-up repairs scheduled.
- Tow services have been requested to clear the scene.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area or expect delays as crews continue to investigate and clean up the crash site.
