Police Pursuit Suspect Struck, Killed on Bridge over San Francisco Bay
SAN FRANCISCO BAY, Calif. (Sept. 21, 2022) — A driver struck and killed a pedestrian on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge on the eastbound side of California State Route 92 over San Francisco Bay.
The collision occurred about 4:32 a.m. on Sept. 21st, according to a California Highway Patrol dispatch.
Prior to the crash, the San Mateo Sheriff’s Office engaged in a pursuit of a driver in a white 2020 Ford Mustang in the Half Moon Bay area. Police lost the motorist in the Hillsborough area, but the driver entered the bridge on SR-92 and ran out of gas. The suspect exited the Mustang on the bridge and was on foot when a passing motorist in a gray Nissan Altima or Sentra struck him.
The driver in the Nissan called 911 to report the collision stating “he hit an unknown object on the freeway.” He told operators that other vehicles had stopped including two semi trucks and there was the Mustang stopped on the right side.
Authorities responded and confirmed the suspect’s death at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
Meanwhile, tow trucks removed both the Mustang and the Nissan from the roadway.
Investigators continue to work on the case.
