Burrtec Garbage Truck Involved in Fatal Crash

JOSHUA TREE, Calif. (Jan. 16, 2025) – Benjamin Perez, 31, of Yuma Arizona, died in a four-vehicle crash Tuesday in Joshua Tree on Twentynine Palms Highway (SR-62) at Rotary Way.

The three-vehicle collision occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Jan. 14th, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials reported the drivers of a Tesla, a Chevrolet pickup, a Nissan Altima, and a garbage truck were involved in a collision in the westbound lanes of state Route 62.

Benjamin Perez was driving a Nissan Sentra at a high speed on the eastbound side of Twentynine Palms Highway. He was driving the car behind another driver in a slower-moving Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

The Nissan attempted to avoid hitting the Chevrolet and turned to the right. However, the motorist lost control and hit the Chevrolet before it entered the westbound side of the road and crashed into a Burrtec trash truck and then a Tesla.

Paramedics transported Benjamin Perez to Hi-Desert Medical Center where he later died from his injuries, according to the San Bernardino Coroner’s office.

The driver from the Tesla was also injured and transported to Hi-Desert Medical Center for minor injuries, but the Burrtec driver was not harmed.

Finally, the driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck failed to stop. Authorities are seeking to locate its driver in what they described as a dark green Chevrolet Silverado with an extended cab, with step rails, a missing front license plate, and it could have a 4X4 decal on the left side of its rear bed.

Tow trucks removed all three of the damaged vehicles from the roadway.

Investigators are working to determine the driver at fault for the Burrtec garbage truck crash on Twentynine Palms Highway in Joshua Tree.
