Deadly Collision Involving Suspect in Hit-and-run Crash
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (Jan. 20, 2025) — One person and a dog are dead, others are injured, and a driver has been detained following two multi-vehicle crashes Sunday night on Sixth Street in San Francisco.
The fatal crash involved seven vehicles just after 6 p.m. on Jan. 19th, between Harrison and Bryant streets, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision involved a suspect in a black Tesla who allegedly fled an earlier crash involving four motorists on the northbound Interstate 280 Freeway. Some people suffered minor injuries in that collision.
Just moments later, the driver of the Tesla allegedly fled that crash and drove to Sixth Street. It’s here that the driver was possibly involved in a second crash involving a fatality. The vehicle reportedly set off a chain-reaction crash. One of the vehicles rear-ended was an unoccupied, self-driving Waymo, according to the California Highway Patrol. The car suffered major damage.
The San Francisco Fire Department responded and transported two people with major injuries to a trauma center. Several others were treated for minor injuries and some were not hurt.
Authorities detained a possible suspect who was driving the Tesla, but that person was also injured and taken to a hospital.
Detectives are working to determine whether or not alcohol and/or drugs were factors in the collision.
Witnesses are asked to call the San Francisco Police Department tip line at 415-575-4444.
