SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. (Feb. 15, 2023) — A fatal crash between a semi-truck and a pickup happened Wednesday morning on US Highway 97 or Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway in Dorris, Siskiyou County.
The traffic collision occurred about 5:19 a.m. on Feb. 15th, according to a California Highway Patrol dispatch.
Dispatch operators spoke with the semi-truck driver who told them they were traveling about 40 mph on a curve in the roadway just west of Dorris when the truck hit the pickup.
Cal Fire responded and reported one person with moderate injuries and one person from the truck deceased on the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck was transported by ambulance to a hospital.
The semi-truck was smoking and car parts were in the roadway following the collision.
There was one-way traffic in the southbound lanes and the northbound lanes of the highway were closed due to the crash. The investigation into the crash is expected to last roughly six hours, police said.
Tow trucks removed the pickup truck with major damage and the big rig with major front-end damage from the roadway.
The cause of the fatal truck crash on Highway 97, as well as liability, remain under investigation.
