Alleged DUI Crash in Dana Point

DANA POINT, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2023) – A fatal Dana Point crash involving an alleged DUI driver happened Sunday night on Coast Highway, just south of Palisades Drive.

The deadly crash occurred at around 8:20 p.m. on Nov. 5th, according to a report by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Evan Madison Owen, 43, of Littleton, Colorado, was driving southbound in a 2019 BMW that collided with a 1999 Plymouth due to unknown circumstances.

The man in his 50s driving the Plymouth sustained major injuries and was transported by Orange County Fire Authority paramedics to a hospital where he later died. Authorities have not released the victim’s name at this time.

Meanwhile, police investigating the crash determined that the Colorado man was driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs.

He was first arrested on suspicion of DUI, but the charges of second-degree murder were added after authorities determined Owen had knowledge of the dangers of drunk driving due to his experience as a volunteer firefighter in the county of Los Angeles, police said.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is heading up the investigation.
