Deadly Collision on I-15 Freeway
EL CERRITO, Calif. (August 31, 2023) — A fatal El Cerrito crash happened Thursday on the southbound Interstate 15 Freeway, just north of Cajalco Road.
At least two vehicles were involved in the collision around 12:42 p.m. on August 31st, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A witness called CHP operators to report a driver in a black hatchback was driving recklessly and “used emergency lanes” before allegedly causing the accident, the report said.
The small black car reportedly collided with a pickup truck before it crashed into the center divider and overturned and landed back on its wheels, the report said. The silver pickup truck wound up in the middle lanes of the freeway. One vehicle apparently went off the freeway and landed on the Cajalco Road off ramp.
Paramedics responded and confirmed at least one person dead at the scene. At least one person suffered major injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center, the report said.
Caltrans closed down several lanes of the freeway due to the crash.
Investigators are piecing together what happened and will determine fault for the fatal crash on the 15 Freeway.
