SANTA MARIA, Calif. (Jan. 2, 2024) — Two people are dead and a third person sustained major injuries Saturday night in a fatal head-on crash on Highway 101 in Santa Maria.

The two-vehicle collision occurred at around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30th, according to CHP officials and KSBY News.

Police say a driver in a 2003 Nissan Murano was traveling in the wrong direction in the northbound Highway 101 when the car collided with a 2013 Toyota Highlander SUV.

Paramedics responded and located two people in the Nissan Murano who died at the scene. They were later identified as Arnol Hernandez Zuniga, 30, and Adrian Rojas-Ramirez, 30, both of Santa Maria.

Meanwhile, the 37-year-old driver of the Toyota Highlander was taken to Marian Medical Center with major injuries.

CHP officials are working to determine if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the fatal Santa Maria crash.
