Fatal Head-on Crash Highway 108, Lower Mono Way in Sonora

Deadly Crash Behind Walmart on State Route 108
SONORA, Calif., (July 30, 2026) — A tragic head-on collision claimed the life of Michael Barreno, 39, of Jamestown Thursday afternoon on Highway 108, at Lower Mono Way, behind a Walmart, in Sonora.
Meanwhile, Christopher Vanzandt, 64, of Twain Harte, was airlifted to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries.
The incident occurred on July 30th around 1:22 p.m. when a 4×4 Ford F250 pickup truck driven by Vanzandt reportedly swerved into opposing traffic and was involved in a collision with a Toyota Corolla driven by Barreno, according to the CHP incident log. Emergency services were promptly notified, with units arriving on the scene shortly after the collision was reported. Police closed down westbound traffic on SR-108 at Lower Mono and the eastbound traffic at Washington Street.
Emergency medical services responded quickly, but sadly, the man driving the Toyota succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office Coroner was notified and dispatched to the location. A GoFundMe is raising money to support the Barreno family.
The Sonora Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. They are urging any witnesses to come forward and assist in the investigation.
