
Head-on Semi-Truck, SUV Crash on Highway 59
MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (Dec. 27, 2023) — A fatal head-on crash between a semi-truck and an SUV happened Tuesday morning on Highway 59 and Rahilly Road in Merced County.
The California Highway Patrol sent police officers to the scene of the fiery collision just after 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 26h.
Police officers reported the northbound box truck was traveling along Highway 59 when a southbound driver in an SUV veered into the truck’s path.
The two vehicles crashed head-on and the SUV caught on fire. Authorities say the driver of the SUV died at the scene. Paramedics responded to the scene, but it’s unknown if the truck driver was hurt in the crash at this time.
Traffic investigators are working to determine why the SUV driver veered into the path of the truck driver.
Tow trucks removed the SUV and the 3-axle box truck fully loaded with 40,000 pounds of merchandise and detached from its front axle.
