Two Men Killed in Lakeside Collision

EL CAJON, Calif., (May 21, 2026) — A tragic head-on collision resulted in two fatalities on Interstate 8 Freeway West near Lake Jennings Park in Lakeside on Thursday morning.

The incident was reported on May 21st at approximately 11:03 a.m. involving a blue Honda Accord and a black 2023 Toyota RAV4 SUV. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of the SUV crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the Honda head-on. One of the vehicles reportedly rolled over onto its roof during the collision, blocking both lanes of the freeway. There were no reports of fire at the scene, but the crash caused significant traffic disruptions as crews worked to clear the vehicles.

Emergency responders arrived promptly, with units reporting on scene shortly after the accident. A 43-year-old El Cajon man from the Honda Accord died at the scene. Meanwhile, medical personnel transported a second person to Scripps Hospital. Despite their efforts, the 24-year-old El Cajon man from the Toyota was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved, pending notification of next of kin. The California Highway Patrol is conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash and is urging any witnesses to come forward with information that may assist in their inquiry.
