 Fatal Wrong-Way Driver Crash Woodley Avenue in Lake Balboa

Woman, Boy, 5, Killed; Four Seriously Injured

LAKE BALBOA, Calif. (June 30, 2023) – A 5-year-old boy and a 74-year-old woman both died in a fatal crash with an alleged wrong-way motorist on Woodley Avenue in Lake Balboa.

Four others were hospitalized with minor to serious injuries following the two-vehicle crash around 9:35 p.m. on Thursday, between Victory and Burbank boulevards, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A man and woman in their 30s were traveling in a white Honda Accord northbound on Woodley Avenue when the male driver allegedly crossed over the center divider and hit a southbound gray 2020 Honda Civic, MyNewsLA reports. The second car was driven by a man in his 30s, a 27-year-old woman was in the front passenger seat and the 60-year-old woman and the 5-year-old boy were in the back seats.

Fatal Crash on Woodley Avenue

Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded and pronounced the Aura Calderon De Tobar, 74, dead at the scene. The boy, identified as Yeshua Cordova Tobar of Los Angeles, was transported to a hospital, but he died shortly after his arrival.

The alleged wrong-way driver and his female passenger were among the four survivors. Paramedics transported the man along with his passenger to a hospital. The man and woman from the gray Honda were also taken to the hospital for undisclosed injuries.

Investigators are working on the case to determine if drugs, alcohol or speed were contributing factors in the crash. Witnesses or anyone with video surveillance footage, should call 877-LAPD-247.
