Driver Struck, Killed Pedestrian on Stanford Street

HEMET, Calif. (March 19, 2025) — A fatal pedestrian accident happened Wednesday morning in Hemet on Stanford Street near Johnston Avenue.

The deadly collision occurred in front of 26761 Stanford Street around 7:10 a.m. on March 19th, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials reported a driver in a silver Chrysler 300 sedan struck the victim due to unknown circumstances.

Unfortunately, the pedestrian suffered major injuries and died at the scene. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department sent the coroner to the scene and an investigation is underway. Also, both sides of the roadway were blocked due to the crash and investigation. The speed limit on Stanford is 40 mph and it’s 35 mph for Johnston Avenue. There is also a stop sign for traffic entering Stanford from Johnston and there are no marked crosswalks here, however, it’s a residential area where pedestrian traffic is expected.

Finally, a tow truck removed the damaged vehicle from the roadway to be stored for evidence and police issued a cite and release ticket due to a possible traffic violation to the driver with bail set at $10,000.

In California, police may give a citation such as this for suspected unlawful conduct, instead of bringing the driver to jail for a formal booking. The motorist is released after they promise to appear in court. This is typically done in cases involving a low-level offense, such as a misdemeanor or infraction.
