Fatal La Jolla Crash on Torrey Pines Road and Prospect Street

Land Rover’s Driver Made U-Turn into Path of Oncoming Car

LA JOLLA, Calif. (Sept. 16, 2026) — A fatal crash happened Monday at Torrey Pines Road and Prospect Street in La Jolla between two vehicles; one of them made a U-turn into the path of the oncoming vehicle.

The deadly La Jolla collision occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.

San Diego Police stated that a 56-year-old man driving northbound in a Land Rover initiated a U-turn mid-block and turned into the path of an oncoming Mitsubishi Mirage sedan. The 68-year-old woman driving the southbound Mitsubishi was unable to avoid crashing into the right front side of the Land Rover.

Unfortunately, a 69-year-old man who was a passenger in the Mitsubishi was pronounced deceased on scene. Also, the woman driving the Mitsubishi suffered major injuries, including two broken arms, two femur fractures, a fractured pelvis, and facial fractures. The woman was transported by ambulance to a hospital for treatment of her injuries.

The Land Rover driver reported he was in pain, but it’s unknown if he was hospitalized.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
