Multiple Fatalities in Wrong-Way Driver Crash on I-5 Freeway (Updated)

 Fatal Maxwell Crash Interstate 5 Freeway in Colusa CountyMAXWELL, Calif. (August 22, 2022) – A fatal wrong-way driver crash on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway near the Maxwell Rest Stop left four people dead and one with major injuries in Colusa County.

The two-vehicle, head-on collision occurred about 12:44 a.m. on Monday, August 22nd, just north of the city of Williams, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Witnesses reported the alleged wrong-way driver in a 2012 Nissan Altima to the CHP shortly before the motorist crashed into a 2022 Nissan Altima occupied by four people, the CHP report said. Following the collision, three of the four people in the second vehicle suffered fatal injuries and all four were trapped, Action News Now and the CHP reported.

4 Killed in Crash on Interstate 5 in Maxwell

The occupants who died are Timothy McDaniels, 57, of Vacaville, Quincy Lovelace, 28, of Suisun City and Christopher Martinez, 34, of Suisun City, according to a report by KCRA.

Firefighters responded and extricated them and transported the surviving person identified as David McDaniels, 52, of Suisun City. They transported him by air ambulance to Enloe Medical Center with major injuries.

Meanwhile, the suspected wrong-way driver also suffered major injuries in the crash. Paramedics transported Celeste Gonzales, 24, of Maxwell, by air ambulance to Enloe Medical Center. She later died at the hospital.

Finally, investigators are working on the case to determine if alcohol and or drugs were a factor in the collision.
