Luis Diaz Romero Arrested Hit-and-run Crash
MERCED, Calif. (July 25, 2023) – A fatal hit-and-run motorcycle accident happened Monday night at Highway 140 and Buhach Road in Merced.
The collision occurred around 10 p.m. on July 24th, according to the California Highway Patrol report.
Luis Diego Diaz Romero, 24, of Atwater, was driving a Nissan Sentra when he attempted to make a left turn onto Buhach Road. The driver pulled in front of an eastbound Yamaha motorcycle and the two vehicles collided.
The rider was thrown off the bike into the westbound lanes of Highway 140, police said. Next, a 20-year-old Merced woman reportedly ran over the rider in the roadway.
Meanwhile, the driver from the Nissan fled the scene on foot, but was found by police at his home shortly afterwards.
Investigators arrested the suspect and booked him into Merced County Jail. He faces felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter charges, the CHP said.
The fatal motorcycle accident on Highway 140 remains under investigation.
