1 Killed, 1 Hospitalized After Motorcyclists Collide on Highway 88

ALPINE COUNTRY, Calif. (May 28, 2024) — A fatal motorcycle accident happened Monday afternoon on Highway 88 at Red Lake Road in Alpine Country.

The head-on collision occurred at around 5 p.m. on Memorial Day between two motorcyclists in Sierra Nevada mountains in Northern California.

One of the motorcyclists died and the other sustained major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Marcus Canizales, 50, of Hayward, was riding a 2007 Harley Davidson V-Rod on Highway 88 when he allegedly made an unsafe pass across the double yellow lines. The motorcyclist collided with an oncoming 2007 BMW motorcycle ridden by a man from Gardnerville, Nevada.

The 52-year-old Nevada man and the 50-year-old Hayward man were both ejected from their motorcycles.

Paramedics responded and rushed the 52-year-old from the BMW to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe to be treated for major injuries.

Sadly, the Hayward man suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
