Deadly Crash Near Elkhorn Equestrian Center in Rio Linda
SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. (August 21, 2026) — A fatal multi-vehicle crash happened in Rio Linda on Friday afternoon on eastbound Elkhorn Boulevard near 20th Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fiery crash happened on August 21st at approximately 2:01 p.m. near 2138 Elkhorn Boulevard. Initial CHP reports described a collision involving a silver BMW and a blue Toyota Tercel, but additional reports indicated that as many as five vehicles may have been involved.
Emergency Response on Elkhorn Boulevard
At least one person was reportedly trapped inside a vehicle following the crash. CHP also reported that one of the vehicles caught fire, prompting fire personnel to respond.
The collision left vehicles and people in the roadway, bringing eastbound traffic to a standstill. CHP subsequently shut down the eastbound lanes and began diverting traffic toward 22nd Street.
A tow company was requested to remove the damaged vehicles, while CHP investigators indicated they might need to collect evidence from the scene.
By approximately 2:26 p.m., fire personnel had begun coordinating with the coroner, confirming the crash had resulted in at least one fatality.
The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the person who died or information about additional injuries.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area as the investigation and cleanup continue.
