 Multi-Vehicle Crash Highway 166, Near Santa Maria

Fatal Labor Day Car Accident

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (Sept. 5, 2023) — A 28-year-old Victorville woman is dead and three people were hospitalized after a three-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 166 on Labor Day.

It happened on Cuyama Highway near the Twitchell Reservoir and Alamo Creek Road, just northeast of Santa Maria. The fatal crash was reported to be a “mass-casualty incident” in the 7400 block of Highway 166, just east of Highway 101.

The multi-vehicle collision occurred just before 1 p.m. on Monday afternoon Sept. 4th, according to Noozhawk. A driver in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was eastbound on Highway 166 and allegedly tried to overtake another motorist when it crashed head-on into a westbound 2003 Chevy Tahoe. Also, a driver in a 2018 Toyota Corolla traveling behind the Tahoe collided with both vehicles.  

Multiple agencies sent emergency responders to the scene including the CHP, Cal Fire-San Luis Obispo, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the Santa Maria Fire Department and Los Padres National Forest.

Manuel Aguilera, 52, of Bakersfield, the driver of the Tahoe, was airlifted by helicopter to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment of major injuries.

The Victorville woman, who was a passenger in the Silverado, died following the collision. Arturo Garcia, 28, of Victorville, the Silverado driver, also had major injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center.

The driver from the Toyota Corolla, Crystal Nunez, 34, of San Jose, was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center to be treated for her minor injuries. .

Meanwhile, police closed down a portion of Highway 166 between Highway 101 and the Cuyama Valley to investigate and clear the crash scene.
