Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-80 Freeway Near Pinole Valley Road
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif., (August 10, 2026) — A fatal motorcycle accident involving multiple vehicles happened late Sunday night on Interstate 80 westbound, just east of Pinole Valley Road.
The incident was first reported at approximately 11:33 p.m. on August 9, 2026. According to the California Highway Patrol, five vehicles, including a red Toyota and a black Ford Maverick, were involved in the crash that initially blocked the number one lane of the freeway. The collision involved a dark sport motorcycle and reportedly resulted in the rider being down in lane three.
Emergency responders, including paramedics and officers, arrived at the scene shortly after the initial call. The Contra Costa Coroner’s Office was also notified as one individual tragically succumbed to their injuries. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The crash prompted a SigAlert, which resulted in the closure of all westbound lanes of I-80 for several hours while authorities conducted their investigation and worked to clear the scene. The lanes were eventually reopened by 5:45 a.m. on August 10.
The California Highway Patrol is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and has requested any witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information or dash cam footage of the incident is encouraged to contact the authorities.
