Deadly Crash on State Route 73
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (August 14, 2023) – A fatal Newport Beach pedestrian accident happened Saturday on the 73 Freeway toll road near MacArthur Boulevard and the University of California, Irvine (UCI) campus.
The traffic accident occurred around 1 a.m. in the southbound lanes of State Route 73 near UCI and MacArthur Boulevard, according to KTLA 5 News.
The drivers of a black Ford Fusion reportedly struck the unidentified man due to unknown circumstances. The female driver stopped the car nearby. The victim suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Meanwhile, another female who could have been related to the fatally injured person was found at the scene. Authorities transported the person to a home on the UCI campus.
The Ford driver and their passenger remained at the scene and a tow truck removed the vehicle due to front-end damage from the pedestrian accident.
Police closed down all southbound traffic lanes due to the crash and investigators are working to determine liability for the collision. The CHP’s Santa Ana station is heading up the investigation.
