3 People Killed, 3 Arrested DUI in Multi-Vehicle Collision
NORWALK, Calif. (July 17, 2023) — Three people died in a 4-vehicle crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway in Norwalk and three of four drivers were arrested on felony or misdemeanor DUI charges.
The chain-reaction crash occurred around 2:20 a.m. on Sunday, July 16th, near Florence Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol dispatch.
Luis Marroquin, 41, of Pomona, Joel Araujo, 40, and Arilene Rivero, 32, of Pico Rivera, all died at the scene of the multi-vehicle crash, according to MyNewsLA.
Clarence Hill, 23, was allegedly drunk driving when he crashed his 2017 Honda into a sound wall on the northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway, just south of Florence Avenue, the CHP said. Next, a Hadley’s tow truck driver stopped his truck behind the disabled Honda. Than a 2011 Kia driven by Hector Rivero of Pico Rivera crashed into the tow truck. The impact killed Arilene Rivero who was riding as a passenger in the Kia.
Two more people died when a 2016 Toyota driven by Luis Marroquin, 22, of Pomona, also crashed into the tow truck. The Toyota’s two passengers, Luis Marroquin, 41, and Joel Araujo, 40, both died at the scene.
Meanwhile, Hector Rivero, and the younger Luis Marroquin, both suffered major injuries and were transported by ambulances to Saint Francis Medical Center. Police later arrested both of them at the hospital on suspicion of felony DUI.
Finally, police also arrested Clarence Hill, who was driving the Honda, on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI.
The case remains under investigation.
