Man, Woman Killed in Pedestrian Accident
SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. (July 13, 2023) — Two people were killed Tuesday in a pedestrian accident on Elkhorn Boulevard in North Highlands and the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
The deadly crash occurred in the 5100 block of Elkhorn Boulevard around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11th, east of Hillsdale Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A man and woman were walking on a sidewalk when a driver in a 2003 Honda Civic traveling eastbound on Elkhorn Boulevard struck them, Fox 40 News reports. The car, occupied by three people, was traveling at an unsafe speed based on traffic conditions, police said. The vehicle was approaching stopped traffic when its driver swerved to the right to avoid hitting the other motorists. The car went up onto the sidewalk and hit the man and woman.
Paramedics responded and pronounced both pedestrians deceased at the scene. The man and woman were in their 50s or 60s, according to KCRW news.
Also, an 18-year-old passenger from the Honda suffered minor injuries, but a 20-year-old passenger was not injured.
Meanwhile, police arrested the 20-year-old driver of the Honda identified as Alyssa Taylor Sandoval on suspicion of DUI. Police booked her into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
