1 Dead, 5 Injured in Crash Involving Pedestrian, Two Vehicles
TEHAMA COUNTY, Calif. (Oct. 7, 2024) — A fatal pedestrian accident set off a two-vehicle crash early Monday on the Interstate 5 Freeway, just south of Liberal Avenue in Corning.
The two collisions occurred near the Rolling Hills Casino and Resort at 12:05 a.m. on Oct. 7th in Tehama County, according to the California Highway Patrol and ABC 7 News.
The crash began when a 2004 Ford Edge driven by Estella Cedillo-Chavez, 52, of Fresno, struck the unidentified 39-year-old Corning man who was crossing the freeway.
The driver of the Ford Edge came to a stop in the number two lane and called 911 for help. Meanwhile, roughly two minutes later, a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria sedan driven by William Ridge, 71, of Orland, rear-ended the stopped Ford Edge.
Paramedics responded to help those involved, but the pedestrian died on scene. However, they transported five people with various injuries to Enloe Hospital.
There were four people from the Ford Edge with minor injuries and the 71-year-old Orland man from the Crown Victoria had major injuries.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Red Bluff closed down the roadway for roughly two hours and they are heading up the investigation.
CHP officials do not suspect alcohol was a factor in this collision.
Finally, witnesses or anyone with information about the collision should call CHP Red Bluff at (530) 737-6746.
