Fatal Pedestrian Accident on Highway 101, I-380 Freeway in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., (July 16, 2026) — A fatal pedestrian accident occurred Thursday night on southbound U.S. Highway 101, near the Interstate 380 interchange and the San Francisco Airport.
The traffic accident occurred on July 16th at approximately 11:14 p.m. when emergency responders arrived at the scene to find a pedestrian lying in the roadway. The location was identified as southbound 101, just south of the Airport off-ramp. Several vehicles with hazard lights on were pulled over on the right-hand side of the highway, possibly associated with the incident.
Authorities confirmed that all lanes, except for the number one lane, were closed following the collision to facilitate the investigation and response efforts. The San Mateo County Coroner was also notified and responded to the scene.
The identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The specific details regarding how the pedestrian came to be in the roadway and the involvement of other vehicles remain under investigation.
The California Highway Patrol is urging anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information to come forward as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
