Pedestrian Fatally Struck on SR-86 Prompting Overnight Road Closure
INDIO, Calif. (June 11, 2025) — A pedestrian was struck and killed late Tuesday night on southbound State Route 86 near the Interstate 10 interchange in Indio, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The incident was reported at 10:54 p.m. on June 10. Initial CHP dispatch logs indicate a caller reported that their father had run over a person who “ran in front of his vehicle.” The pedestrian was found lying in the middle lane of the highway.
Emergency personnel, including Cal Fire and CHP units, responded swiftly. Despite efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. A second vehicle—a semi-truck—was reported to have also driven over the individual after the initial impact.
Authorities immediately closed southbound SR-86 at the I-10 junction to conduct a full investigation and clear the scene. Caltrans was requested to assist with the closure, and Plaza Tow was dispatched to handle vehicle evidence and transportation.
The closure lasted several hours overnight. By 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday, the roadway was reopened to traffic after officials completed their on-scene work and removed all evidence.
CHP has not released the identity of the victim. The vehicle reportedly involved bore Baja California, Mexico license plates.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Indio area CHP office.
