Pit Bull Dog Fatally Mauls Boy, 5, at Home on Portland Street in Oro GrandeSAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. (Feb. 11, 2020) — A 5-year-old Oro Grande boy, identified as Sterling Vermeer, died after being attacked by his family’s pit bull Monday afternoon, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials said.

The dark brown pit bull dog attacked the child after an adult caring for the child left him alone with the animal for just a minute.

The incident took place about 3 p.m. in the 15100 block of Portland Street near First Street.

A family member called 911 and told the operator that the dog was biting the child and would not let go, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Sadly the boy suffered major injuries during the attack and died before police and paramedics arrived.

The dog was taken away by the San Bernardino County Animal Control. Police did not know what prompted the attack, but it began when the adult stepped out of the room.

The child’s parents were notified about what happened and investigators are looking into the circumstances.

Anyone with information about the dog or the incident may call Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station Detective J. Collins at 760-552-6800.
