SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (July 23, 2021) — An 8-year-old boy died in a fatal San Bernardino fireworks accident on the Fourth of July.

The child died after being struck by a lit mortar-style firework while attending a block party on South San Carlo Avenue back on July 4 in San Bernardino, according to the San Bernardino Sun.

Someone placed the mortar in a launching tube. However, it tipped over and it rocketed out of the tube. That’s when it struck the boy in the chest, according to the San Bernardino Police Department.

Paramedics rushed the injured child to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, but he later died at the hospital. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office identified the boy on their website.
