SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Jan. 11, 2022) — A fatal San Diego pedestrian accident happened Monday night on the Interstate 5 Freeway, just south of Carmel Mountain Drive.

Someone called 911 about 9:50 p.m. to report a man wearing dark clothing walking in a northbound direction on the right shoulder of the northbound I-5 freeway, according to a dispatch by the California Highway Patrol. The pedestrian reportedly tripped on something or was stumbling in the shoulder area near the merge at the I-805 merge and SR-56.

Shortly after 10 p.m., a driver in a black vehicle allegedly struck and killed the man. The motorist stopped and is cooperating with police. The San Diego Medical Examiner responded, but they will not release the victim’s name until family members are notified.

Additionally, Caltrans San Diego reportedly close down five of the seven northbound lanes in the area and issued a traffic alert, according to the CHP. The HOV and Nos. 1 and 2 lanes remained open.

Meanwhile, investigators seek to determine the cause and liability for the deadly San Diego pedestrian accident.
