Man, 21, Killed; Toddler Among the Injured
SANTA MARIA, Calif. (Sept. 9, 2024) — A 21-year-old man is dead and others suffered injuries in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 166 or West Main Street in Santa Maria.
The deadly collision occurred at around 11:10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7th, according to Noozhawk.
The 21-year-old Santa Maria man was heading eastbound on State Route 166 in a Nissan Kick SUV. Authorities say the young man allegedly used a turn lane to pass a 2008 Nissan Frontier pickup truck that was traveling ahead of him.
That’s when the Nissan collided with a westbound 2016 Dodge Journey that was possibly waiting to turn.
The Dodge got pushed into the Nissan Frontier and the van overturned onto its roof, while the pickup went off the roadway into a ditch.
Meanwhile, the Nissan Kick sustained major front-end damage and its driver suffered fatal injuries at the scene.
Both the Santa Barbara County and Santa Maria fire departments responded to the scene to help those injured and confirmed the young man’s death.
Also, the driver from the Dodge reportedly left the scene after he handed his one-year-old child to a bystander.
Just prior to the fatal crash, the Santa Maria Police Department received a report there was a driver in the grey sedan driving recklessly and they were on the lookout for the motorist.
