3 Dead in Collisions on Highway 101

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (May 22, 2023) — A fatal, chain-reaction Sunnyvale crash left three people dead early Monday on Highway 101, just south of Fair Oaks Avenue.

Several other people were injured in the 12:30 a.m. crash on Monday, May 22nd, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials closed down the roadway in both directions due to the major crash involving around seven motorists.

The initial crash happened in the northbound lanes of Highway 101, just south of Fair Oaks Avenue, police said.

Next, there were several more collisions including one in the southbound lanes.

It’s unknown what set off the collisions, but the three people who died were reportedly pedestrians who had likely exited their vehicles after the collisions.

Traffic lanes in both directions became blocked by the vehicles and emergency responders.

Investigators are piecing together what happened to determine fault for the Sunnyvale crash on Highway 101.
