Head-on Crash on State Route 165
MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (August 25, 2023) – A fatal SUV versus motorcycle accident on Highway 165 happened Wednesday night near August Road in Merced County.
The deadly crash occurred around 10:22 p.m. on August 23rd, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials reported a 35-year-old Hilmar man was riding his 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle around 45 to 50 mph northbound on Highway 165, according to Your Central Valley News. At the same time, a 33-year-old Newman woman was driving her 2013 Audi SUV southbound on the same highway.
She was traveling around 55 mph behind a pickup truck and a semi-truck and trailer combination. She attempted to pass the trucks and pulled directly into the path of the motorcyclist. The rider attempted to avoid the crash and swerved to his right onto the east shoulder of Highway 165. However, the woman also served to her left and crashed into the motorcyclist.
The motorcyclist suffered major injuries and died following the accident on Highway 165. Meanwhile, the SUV driver and a 12-year-old boy riding in her vehicle were not injured.
Investigators are working on the case, but do not suspect alcohol or drugs were factors.
